Cutting continuous basalt roving into short strands results in basalt chopped strands. The product literature states that short basalt fibre extracts called chopped strands are utilised to fortify bonded composites. Concrete with basalt fibre is more ductile, has fewer microcracks, and is resistant to corrosion and chemicals.

The specs listed include cut lengths of 5-90 mm and monofilament diameters of 13-22 μm. Sizes are chosen dependent on additional processing, and operating temperatures range from -200 to +900°C. Polypropylene bags are used for standard packing; upon request, containers of 10, 20, or 500 kg are available.

Designed Around the Processing Method

Because chopped basalt fibres can be utilised in a variety of material systems, slurry selection is crucial. The binder systems for bitumen and Portland cement are listed, along with thermoplastics, epoxy resins, polyesters, PVA, and phenolic resins. Cut length is not the only crucial criteria for consumers. It is necessary to take into account factors like diameter, size, moisture content, packaging, and matrix compatibility. Instead of being seen as a single, standardised fibre product, basalt chopped strands are available in widths and lengths ranging from 5 to 90 mm, allowing selection based on actual production processes and final products.
