Lightweight: Polypropylene yarn has a density of only 0.91 g/cm³, making it the lightest among common chemical fibers; consequently, a given weight of polypropylene yarn yields greater coverage than other fibers.

Strength and Elongation: Polypropylene yarn features high strength, significant elongation, a high initial modulus, and excellent elasticity. This results in good abrasion resistance. Additionally, its wet strength is essentially equal to its dry strength, making it an ideal material for manufacturing fishing nets and ropes.

Moisture Absorption and Dyeability: Polypropylene yarn has extremely low moisture absorption-virtually zero under standard atmospheric conditions. However, it exhibits a wicking effect, transporting water vapor through capillary action within the fabric without absorbing moisture itself. Its dyeability is poor, and the color range is limited, though this can be compensated for by using solution-dyeing (mass-coloration) techniques.

 

Acid and Alkali Resistance: Polypropylene yarn offers good chemical corrosion resistance. With the exception of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated caustic soda, it withstands acids and alkalis well, making it suitable for use in filtration and packaging materials.

Light Resistance: Polypropylene yarn has relatively poor light resistance and thermal stability; it is prone to aging and cannot withstand ironing. However, its aging resistance can be improved by adding anti-aging agents during the spinning process.

Electrical Insulation: Polypropylene yarn possesses good electrical insulation properties, though it is prone to generating static electricity during processing.

Low Cost: Polypropylene yarn is inexpensive, making it the most affordable synthetic fiber currently available.

Abrasion, Wash, and Corrosion Resistance: Polypropylene yarn is non-absorbent and strong, retaining its high strength even when wet, which minimizes abrasion damage caused by water immersion. Furthermore, fine-denier polypropylene offers superior chemical resistance compared to other apparel fibers; it is not damaged by human sweat or by exposure to acids and alkalis at room temperature. Antibacterial and Odor-Resistant: Polypropylene yarn is inherently hydrophobic-meaning it does not absorb moisture or human sweat-thereby fundamentally eliminating the conditions necessary for bacterial growth and survival. This results in antibacterial and odor-resistant properties, while also allowing for cleaner, more thorough laundering, thus meeting health and hygiene standards for clothing.
