What Makes a Board a Board

A mica insulation board is created by layering mica paper with thermosetting resin and hot-pressing it into a dense, processable board. The end product is a rigid material with a thickness dimensional tolerance of about ±0.1 mm and a density of about 2.2 to 2.3 g/cm³. It can be CNC wired, drilled, milled, and tapped, which separates the circuit board from the flexible board, making it the right choice for components that must maintain their shape.

Where Rigid Insulation Earns Its Keep

When a flat, firm separation is needed, wooden boards are utilised. They are used as support plates in furnaces and heaters, arc barriers in switchgear, high-temperature gaskets, and structural insulation pads. Although most industrial orders fall between 0.1 and 3.0 mm, standard formats are 1000 x 600 mm and 1000 x 1200 mm, and thicknesses range from 0.1 mm to 50 mm. Washers, gaskets, and special profiles are all made from the same sheet because the material is cleanly cut and stamped. The tensile and flexural strengths of rigid mica sheets are roughly 150 N/mm² and 230 N/mm², respectively. This is enough to turn the sheets into structural elements rather than merely filler.

Specifying the Right Board

When electrical insulation performance is a crucial design consideration, mica tapes are a good option for the insulation systems of motors, generators, and other electrical equipment. High-voltage AC motors, wind turbine generator stator coils, traction motors, sealed and submersible motors, DC motor field coils and transformer barrier insulation are among the applications listed for Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) operations. Various reinforcing materials, including fibreglass cloth, polyester film, polyester mat, and polyimide film, are used in product variations.
The necessary electrical characteristics, mechanical strength, thickness, impregnation procedure, and winding technique should all be taken into account while choosing muscovite mica tapes. According to the materials listed, muscovite is the best kind of mica for electrical insulation, which makes it perfect for insulation systems where dielectric performance is the main consideration.
