Thickness and Dielectric Go Together

The first thing to understand about mica sheets used for electrical insulation is that dielectric strength is influenced by thickness. Under IEC 60371-2 test conditions, 0.1 mm sheets break at approximately 20 to 25 kV, 0.5 mm sheets at around 10 to 15 kV, and 3 mm sheets at approximately 5 to 8 kV. Therefore, the thickness you choose is not just a mechanical decision, but rather a safety margin between operating voltage and failure rate. As a result, the thickness you select represents a safety margin between operating voltage and failure rate rather than merely a mechanical choice. The grade selected for hot windings is not a guess because temperature steadily erodes this edge: phlogopite has over 80% dielectric strength at 600°C, whereas muscovite has between 85% and 90% at 400°C.

The Selection Checklist

Rigid sheets are processed into barriers and gaskets, whereas flexible sheets wrap coils and bend wires. Flexible rolls range from 500 to 1000 mm in width and 25 to 50 m in length, resulting in minimal waste during typical layout cuts, while rigid sheets are available in widths of 1000 x 600 mm and 1000 x 1200 mm. Because muscovite gives greater dielectric strength at a lower cost, it is used for the majority of electrical operations below 500°C.

Verify Before You Buy

Don't trust what the label says. Measure the sheet's overall dimensions, visually inspect it for inclusions and cracks, and perform dielectric testing on the sample in compliance with IEC 60243 to perform a three-point inspection. Ask for an analytical certificate that covers thermal rating, dielectric strength, and sticky content.The flexibility grade in silicone adhesive has an actual shelf life of around 24 months; store the paper between 15–30°C and 30–60% relative humidity.
